We are typeface geeks and you should be too, thus the natural gravitation to this site. Sliders are also very cool and significant goodies of our design and development tools, and tend to be a reoccurring theme for us. The main interface for this site is based on a gigantic slider, for the entire site is essentially a big scroll-bar. Adobe Flash and ActionScript 3.0 provide some super clean light-weight easing and makes the user’s experience that much more enjoyable; it is just plain fun!
Besides interface design, there is a myriad of other elements that help make for a good site design. My programmer would refer to it as the “bling” of the site. These elements include, but are not limited to, color, spacial relationships, imagery, form, and typeface. This particular site utilizes clean minimalistic design elements, therefore lending the focus of the site to be content driven. In this case, the content is typeface, which is also an essential and significant design element in and of itself.
Typeface deals with more than simply selecting your favorite font. Size is equally significant, for fonts appear differently at different sizes and therefore communicate different messages. There are also aesthetic and practical considerations when dealing with type and size. Is there an identity or brand to be faithful to? What message(s) do you wish to communicate and what emotions might you want to conjure with this experience? Who will be the audience? Style is also a serious consideration. Serif and non-serif, handwriting, calligraphic, typewriter, and modern are just a few stylistic items to be mindful of. The Kerning of type is also very important to note. Much more could be said about type, for this is just a teaser. There are many good books and resources to explore type and to begin thinking creatively with it . One resource, thinkingwithtype.com is a personal favorite. Feel free to leave a comment if you are interested in learning more.
Varying European typeface styles, big and small alike, sliding across the screen is indeed very fun. These folks do an exemplary job of thinking with type! This site is nicely balanced with design and function. While the site is aesthetically pleasing and fun to play with, it showcases many of their luscious European fonts with a very useful Adobe Flash interface to experiment and play with the different fonts of interest. Just type your favorite text into the box and you can experiment with the various fonts of choice. There are many additional options besides size, such as leading, font weight, and a download function. You can Try and Buy all of their fabulous fonts. Very well done and well worth the visit. If you are not a typeface geek yet, you very well might be successfully converted.
